Your computer decides which network to prioritise by following a metric system. It detects which network has lower metrics automatically and sets it as your primary network. Now, the trick to change the order and set your chosen network as primary is simple. You have to change the metrics. But, how to do that? Look below.

• Go to the “Network and Sharing Centre” via the search or right-clicking the internet icon.
• Click on the “Change adapter settings” option.
• Select the adapter you want to lower the metrics of in order to set it as the primary network.
• Let’s suppose you prefer the Ethernet connection over the WiFi and want the Windows to select it first. So, you may right-click on its icon.
• Click on “Properties.” Once a window pops up, select “Internet protocol version 4” and tap on the “Properties” button.
• Another window will pop up, there’s a button “Advanced” below the sections, right above the OK and Cancel tabs.
• A new window will open, you’ll find the “Automatic Metric” box there, below which there’s an “Interface Metric” option.
• Firstly, you may untick the “Automatic Metric” box which allows you to enter a lower value manually in the “Interface Metric” box.
• You may enter a number like 5 or 10. Your Windows PC will start prioritising the Ethernet network. If you want to set the WiFi as the preferred network, then you may follow the same steps, setting a lower metric for it.

This is the simplest and easiest way to prioritise your internet networks on your PC or notebook. In case you’re wondering where to find the metrics set by the computer, you may check that information by running the command prompt.

Press the Start button + R to open the command prompt and enter “route print.” Information about your networks will open up where you can see the metrics. You can check the numbers before you make changes in the settings to have an idea about how much of a lower value you can add in the “Interface Metrics” and after as well to ensure your settings are saved.
